What Is Credit Card Debt, Really?
A plain-language look at how credit card balances actually work — and why they can grow even when you're paying every month.
Section 1 of 4
When you carry a balance on a credit card, you're not "behind on a bill" — you've taken out a loan, one swipe at a time. The card company lent you the money for each purchase, and like any lender, it charges interest until the loan is repaid.
That reframe matters for two reasons:
- It removes the shame. Millions of people carry card balances; it's a loan product working exactly as designed, not a personal failure.
- It lets you compare options. Once you see it as a loan, you can ask the same questions you'd ask about any loan: What's the interest rate? What would it cost to pay it off faster? Is there a cheaper loan to replace it?
