Understanding Needs vs. Wants
A judgment-free way to sort spending into needs, wants, and everything in between — without pretending wants don't matter.
Section 1 of 6
"Needs versus wants" has a reputation problem. It's often delivered as a scolding — as if wanting things were the flaw that caused the debt. That framing isn't just unkind; it's inaccurate. Research on household debt consistently finds that big shocks — medical bills, job loss, divorce, car repairs — drive far more of it than lattes ever have.
So treat this lesson as what it actually is: a sorting tool. When money is tight, you need to know which expenses are load-bearing and which are flexible. That's it. No expense is shameful; some are just more movable than others.
