Reading Your Statements

Your card statement is full of useful information — once you know where to look. A guided tour of the numbers that actually matter.

Section 1 of 5

If you've been avoiding your credit card statements, you're in good company — when a balance feels overwhelming, not looking can feel like the only way to cope. But statements are one of the few places where the card company is legally required to tell you the truth about your debt, in writing, every month.

Five minutes with a statement answers questions that anxiety tends to inflate: exactly what you owe, exactly what it's costing you, and exactly what would happen if you kept paying the minimum. Real numbers are almost always easier to work with than imagined ones.

You don't need to read every line. This lesson walks through the handful of figures that actually matter.
