Overcoming Financial Shame
Shame keeps debt hidden and progress stalled. Here's how to loosen its grip — without pretending the situation away.
Section 1 of 5
Psychologists draw a useful line between two feelings that get tangled together around money:
- Guilt says "I did something that didn't work out." It points at a behavior, so it can motivate change — review the choice, adjust, move on.
- Shame says "I am the kind of person who fails at this." It points at your identity, so it motivates hiding — from the numbers, from other people, sometimes from help itself.
Research on shame consistently finds it's the less useful of the two: it predicts avoidance and secrecy far more than it predicts improvement. If you notice your inner voice saying "I'm bad with money" rather than "that purchase didn't serve me," you've found the pattern this lesson is about.
